Host & volunteerGive back

Give back asa host or helper.

HEAL runs on people who’ve been there. Host a live room, offer a ride or a résumé review on the help board, or simply be someone to talk to. Here’s what each role really involves.

What a meeting host does

Hold the room,keep it safe.

Every HEAL meeting has a human host. No room goes live without one. The controls are simple on purpose, so your attention stays on people.

Hosts see pseudonyms and avatars of the people in the room right now — nothing else.

  1. 01

    Schedule the room

Set a title, category, time and time zone — once, or repeating weekly. You can edit or cancel it later.

  2. 02

    Doors open early

The room opens to members 15 minutes before start. When you, the host, arrive, the meeting goes live — or press Start.

  3. 03

    Invite raised hands

Everyone joins muted. Hands queue in the order they went up; you invite each person to speak, or lower a hand.

  4. 04

    Mute when needed

Mute one person — they stay muted until you allow them back — or mute everyone at once to reset the room.

  5. 05

    Remove and lock

Remove someone who makes the room unsafe (they can’t rejoin that meeting, and it’s logged for moderators). Lock the room to stop new arrivals.

  6. 06

    End the meeting

Close the room for everyone when time’s up. Nothing is recorded, so nothing is left behind.

What hosts never see

Trust runsboth ways.

Being a host gives you the tools to run a room — not a window into anyone’s life. These limits are enforced by the server, not by good intentions.

Private writing

Workbook answers and check-in notes are encrypted and never loaded into host or staff tools.

Attendee lists

There’s no list or export of who came. You see who is in the room while it’s live, by pseudonym — that’s all.

Contact details

No emails, phone numbers or real names. Members appear as their HEAL name and emoji avatar.

Recordings

Meetings are audio-only and HEAL doesn’t record them, so there’s nothing to review afterwards.

Other ways to help

Not a host? There’s room for you.

Most help on HEAL happens person to person, through the help board. You offer; the member decides whether to accept; contact details are only shared once they do.

Peer connection

Someone to talk to who gets it. Sometimes the most useful thing you can offer is twenty minutes and an honest “me too.”

Offer on the help board

Members post what they need. If you can help, offer — as a person, never as a professional or a business.

  • Rides — Getting to an appointment, meeting or job
  • Work — Job leads, résumé help, interview practice
  • Housing — Sober living, rentals, next steps
  • Career paths — Training, school, getting certified
  • Everyday life — Childcare swaps, errands, paperwork
How the help board works

Sponsorship

Be there for one person, over time.

Members can ask for help finding a sponsor on the board, and experienced members can answer. HEAL connects people; it doesn’t assign sponsors, and the relationship follows your own program’s traditions.

Expectations & safety

What we askof every volunteer.

Approved by the team

Hosting is a role the HEAL team grants — nobody can host just by signing up. Tell us about yourself with the form below and someone from the team will follow up.

Live the community rules

Kindness, confidentiality, experience not advice. Hosts and helpers are held to the same rules as everyone — and set the tone.

No solicitation, ever

No recruiting for treatment centers or sober homes, no referral deals, no selling. Volunteering is never a sales channel.

It isn’t crisis work

You’re a peer, not a clinician or an emergency line. If someone may be in danger, point them to 988 or 911 and report it so staff can follow up.

You can step back any time

Your own recovery comes first. Let the team know and step back from hosting or helping. No explanation needed.

HEAL is not an emergency service and is not monitored around the clock. If you or someone else is in danger, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988.

Read the full safety & community rules.

Raise your hand

Tell us how you’d like to help.

This goes to a person on the HEAL team, who will reply by email. Sending it doesn’t sign you up for anything.

  • We won’t ask for your recovery story.
  • Sent only to our support inbox.
