Copyright & Content Policy
Who owns what on HEAL, and how to report material you believe infringes your rights.
Draft — pending legal review. This document describes how HEAL intends to operate and will be finalized by qualified counsel before launch. Until then, write to copyright@teleheal.com with any question.
In plain words
- 01You own what you write on HEAL. You give us only the limited permission we need to run the service.
- 02HEAL owns the site, apps, workbook exercises, articles and the HEAL name and logo. Workbook exercises are for your personal use.
- 03If you believe something on HEAL infringes your copyright, send a notice to copyright@teleheal.com with the details listed below.
- 04If your content was removed by mistake, you can send a counter-notice. Repeat infringers lose their accounts.
- 05For anything that isn’t about copyright, such as harassment or privacy, use in-app reporting or contact our safety team.
This summary is for convenience. The full text below is what applies.

01What this policy covers#
This policy explains who owns the content on HEAL (teleheal.com, the member app, and our mobile and desktop apps), how you may use HEAL’s own materials, and how HEAL handles claims of copyright infringement under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512. It is part of our Terms of Use.
02Your content belongs to you#
Your profile, help-board requests and offers, reports, feedback, workbook answers and check-in notes belong to you. HEAL doesn’t claim ownership of them.
You give HEAL a limited licence to store, process, display and transmit your content only as needed to run and secure the service, keep the community safe, and show it to the people you choose. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to the narrow exceptions in our deletion policy. We never sell your content or use it in advertising, and your workbook answers are encrypted and private unless you share them.
Only post content you have the right to share. Quoting a short passage from a book or a recovery text to discuss it is usually fine; posting whole chapters, articles, songs or images that belong to someone else is not.
03HEAL’s content#
Everything on HEAL that isn’t member content belongs to HEAL or its licensors, including the software and apps, page and app design, text, articles, illustrations, photographs, the workbook exercises and prompts, the provider standard and its checklist, and the compilation of the provider directory. It is protected by US and international copyright and other laws.
You’re welcome to read, link to and share pages from our public website, and to quote short extracts with a link back to the source. Please don’t copy substantial parts of the site, reproduce our design, or republish our articles in full without permission. For permission requests, email legal@teleheal.com.
Some images and fonts are used under licence from third parties and remain theirs. Open-source software we use is subject to its own licences.
04Workbook exercises: personal use#
The guided exercises in the HEAL workbook, meaning the structure, prompts and accompanying text, are HEAL’s. As a member, you may use them for your own recovery, print or export your own answers, and share your answers using the share-link feature or however you like.
You may not, without our written permission:
- copy or republish the exercises themselves, in whole or in substantial part;
- use them in a paid programme, course, treatment setting or product;
- remove HEAL’s name from them or present them as your own.
If you are a clinician, peer-support organization or non-profit and want to use the exercises with the people you serve, please ask at legal@teleheal.com. We’re glad to talk about it.
05The HEAL name and logo#
“HEAL”, “Help Each Other Achieve Life”, the HEAL logo and wordmark, and our other names and logos are trademarks of HEAL, whether or not they are registered. You may refer to HEAL by name to describe it accurately, for example “I found this meeting on HEAL”. You may not:
- use our name or logo in a way that suggests HEAL sponsors, endorses or partners with you, your organization or your product;
- use them in any connection with a treatment center, sober-living home, referral, marketing or lead-generation business, including in advertising, search ads or domain names;
- claim or imply that a provider is “HEAL-vetted” or “HEAL-approved” unless it currently appears in our directory, and then only as our Provider Listing Terms allow;
- alter the logo, or use a name, logo or design confusingly similar to ours.
Because misuse of our name could mislead people looking for help, we take it seriously. Report misuse to legal@teleheal.com.
06Reporting copyright infringement#
If you believe material on HEAL infringes a copyright you own or are authorised to act for, send a written notice to our designated agent (below). Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3), your notice must include:
- your physical or electronic signature (typing your full legal name is fine);
- identification of the copyrighted work you believe is infringed, or, for multiple works, a representative list;
- identification of the material you claim is infringing and enough information for us to find it, such as a link or a description of where it appears in the app;
- your contact information: name, postal address, telephone number and email address;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
- a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorised to act on the owner’s behalf.
Before you send a notice, please consider whether the use might be a fair use, for example a short quote used in a personal share. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly makes a material misrepresentation in a notice or counter-notice may be liable for damages.
Incomplete notices may not be acted on; we will try to tell you what’s missing.
07What we do when we receive a notice#
When we receive a valid notice, we will act promptly to remove or disable access to the material, and we will tell the member who posted it, including a copy of the notice or a summary of it. Because HEAL members are often pseudonymous and their recovery is sensitive, we will never disclose the member’s identity to the complainant except in response to a valid legal process, such as a subpoena under 17 U.S.C. § 512(h).
We don’t review workbook answers, which are encrypted and private, and nothing in this policy gives anyone a way to have them reviewed. A share link someone has received can be reported to us and, if it infringes, we can disable it.
08Counter-notices#
If your content was removed because of a copyright notice and you believe that was a mistake or misidentification, or that your use is authorised or lawful, you can send a counter-notice to our designated agent. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3), it must include:
- your physical or electronic signature;
- identification of the material that was removed and where it appeared before removal;
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification;
- your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district where your address is (or, if you are outside the United States, any judicial district in which HEAL may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.
We will send a copy of your counter-notice to the person who sent the original notice. A counter-notice contains your real name and address, and that person will see them. If you are worried about that, consider talking to a lawyer before you send one.
Unless the original complainant tells us within 10 business days that they have filed a court action to restrain the activity, we will restore the material, or stop disabling access to it, between 10 and 14 business days after we receive your counter-notice.
09Repeat infringers#
HEAL will, in appropriate circumstances, disable or close the accounts of members who repeatedly infringe copyrights. We generally treat an account as a repeat infringer when it has been the subject of more than two valid notices that were not successfully countered, but we may act sooner where the infringement is clear and deliberate. We consider counter-notices and the circumstances of each case before closing an account, and you can ask us to review a closure.
10Our designated agent#
Send copyright notices and counter-notices to HEAL’s designated copyright agent by email at copyright@teleheal.com, with “DMCA notice” or “DMCA counter-notice” in the subject line.
HEAL’s designation of an agent with the US Copyright Office, and a postal address for notices, are being completed before launch. Both will be shown here once registered. Until then, please use the email address above.
This inbox is only for copyright matters. Other messages sent there may not get a reply.
11Complaints that aren’t about copyright#
Most concerns about content on HEAL are not copyright issues. Please use the right route so we can help quickly:
- Harassment, solicitation, unsafe advice, spam or other rule breaks: report it from inside the app. These are handled under the Community Guidelines.
- Someone shared your private information or story, or recorded a meeting: report it in the app as “Sharing someone’s private info”, or email safety@teleheal.com.
- Someone is in danger: call 911, or call or text 988, then report it in the app.
- Misuse of the HEAL name or logo, or defamation concerns: email legal@teleheal.com.
- Your own data, or a privacy request: see our Privacy Policy.
- A listed provider’s information: email providers@teleheal.com.
12If you are outside the United States#
We respond to notices from rights holders anywhere. If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you can also report content you believe is illegal under local law to legal@teleheal.com. Tell us what the content is, where it appears, and why you believe it is illegal, and we’ll review it and let you know what we decide.
13Changes to this policy#
We may update this policy, including when our Copyright Office registration is complete. We’ll post the new version here with its effective date.
HEAL is not an emergency service. In danger, call 911. In crisis, call or text 988. Treatment referrals: SAMHSA 1-800-662-4357.
